  • It’s about chocolate!

    It’s about chocolate!

Chocolate always have been the most loved flavor in the world. Chocolate has got such a taste that no matter how old you are in numbers you cannot ignore the essence and joy of having it. Wherever may you live or wherever you currently at, you would definitely find a pinch of chocolate in some form or the other.

    choco1
But have you ever given a thought that when and where did it come from? What is its origination? And who discovered such a delighting flavor? Is the flavor we savor today in its purest form? Well, it is that one tasteful thing which has an equally mesmerizing and spellbound journey as it tastes. Let’s discuss about the long about journey of Chocolate and how it evolved till today.

Like a fairy tale, chocolate also have a cherishing journey of its beginning and through. Not on calculators, but it is believed that ‘cacao’ (pronounced as ‘kah kow’) tree was discovered some 2500 years ago in the tropical rain forests of Americas. Botanically, a certain pouch like substance of this ‘cacao’ tree contains seeds that are used for the processing of chocolate. According to archaeologists, Mayans and Aztecs were the discoverers of this famed flavor. Mayans had divine relation with cacao tree, they used to worship this tree and Aztecs used to offer the processed cacao beans that is, chocolate, to the God. They used to call this special drink as “Xocalatl”, which means warm or bitter liquid. As per the ancient history of chocolate and its origination, chocolate was consumed as a drink of holy. Aztecs usually had it in a way, mixing up these cacao beans with maize and capsicum and thus getting themselves a spicy drink to sip down. It was a special drink which was used and consumed on high and elevated ceremonies of that age.
The cacao beans were of great value for Aztecs, they even valued it as currency against which trade can be done. Though the cacao beans were not produced there, still it was treated as of great importance.

A Spanish explorer, Don Hernan Cortes, was the soul behind who introduced ‘chocolate’ to Europe, in 16th century. However, a few historians argue that chocolate actually came to Europe with Christopher Columbus, who carried a bag full of cacao on his trip back to Americas. Well, whosoever brought these beans in Europe had made a mark of his sequence, as it made the world view an exquisite flavor. Since, chocolate traveled all way long from Americas to Europe, the habit and manner of its consumption too changed among different people. The Spaniards had their own way of its consumption. They used to make a paste of the beans and then mix it up with vanilla and honey and finally brewing and serving it by pouring into cups from heights to make it frothy and even more amusing. It was their fashion of drinking it and experiencing its excellence.
Within a time span of less than a century, chocolate spread its aroma to all corners of the big continent. Historians unanimously give the credit of popularizing the drink, to Don Cortes. French, being one of the creative nation from its very commencement, have played a greater role in popularizing the drink across the world. It was French only, who came up with idea of coffee houses, which we see today also, to serve the magical taste of cacao beans.

In 17th century, Sir Hans Sloane (England) added milk to the pure drink of cocoa, and thus making it taste a different and afresh. Initially this drink was rather used as a medicine for apothecaries. This recipe of drinking chocolate was then taken over by Cadbury’s presenting it in the form we consume today.

The year 1765 is considered a time of major term in the good history of chocolate. It was in this year when the world got to see the first Chocolate factory in its kind. The factory introduced chocolate in a solid form. Chocolate rolls and cakes and bars were introduced to the world, more like what we have today. It was served in the chocolate emporiums. During the harsh times of World War II, the US soldiers were sent these chocolate bars as it provided enough energy to stay upon. And soon Swiss Chocolate factory was established manufacturing the famous good Swiss chocolate.

    choco2

Hence we see that, the chocolate has been through various transformations. From a bitter sweet drink of the Emperors to cool and solidified bars and cakes. Chocolate is that one flavor which have been loved and admired at every heart and place. From being through old and even older times, chocolate still has its founding and a popular dear for all ages. In the good old and interesting coming of chocolate in existence, chocolate always makes the mouth happy. Today chocolate is not just a drink or solid bar to consume as, it has found place in every industry of modern world. Be it a perfume spray, an icy affair or fountain decoration, all is chocolaty and thus luring and enticing.

Friend 1, “Hey! Have you tried that new Veg. Burger at XYZ?”
Friend 2, “yes! I have. It is so awesome! In love with it! A new addition to my favorite’s list.”
Friend 3, “How come I haven’t heard of it?”
Friend 2, “Come on! We’ll take you there. You won’t tire talking of it. It’s that good.”
Friend 3, “Oh! Let’s go then. I can’t wait anymore.”

    slice-of-life

Such conversations among friends are very common to hear. Friendship has always been a sweet relationship, a sweet duty, a sweet responsibility to take care of. Friends have all time to discuss about their tit-bits, and major events happening in their lives. Food is one such a topic on which friends talk a lot. You’d usually hear a group discussing about a new restaurant opened nearby, or they discussing about a new recipe which they tried at home, and many more endless things related to food. There could be thousands of moments where ‘friends & food’ come together. As it is said, “Friends, who buy you food, are your real friends”. Any outing with friends is incomplete without sharing a bite together. It wouldn’t be incorrect to say, if you have friends you with you out, you won’t return home with an empty stomach.
A college going group of friends planning to try out the new Chinese platter introduced in one of their favorite café after lectures. Twenty of classmates planning a short trip to an amusement park and then thinking where to have their stomachs full. Two colony friends meekly moving out at night and tasting the joy of having something at 24×7 outlets. Friends on a scooty ride, having an ice-cream and eating it up on the way to their homes. The idea of having to go out and try new food items at different places is itself so amusing that the actual experience of it would automatically be of great fun. And the pleasure of having the meal always doubles when you have friends with whom you share similar thinking and taste.

There are various communities also formed, thanks to internet and social media, which give the food updates to their following members and even arrange food trips to various destinations, in their respective cities, to some of the famous outlets and serving their most popular dish on menu. Just with one click you can easily join certain communities and become a member, and thus communicating with people of same interest. This not only provides you with food updates, they even bring you an opportunity to exchange a few words with unknown people with whom you share a common trait, i.e. food love! This all might even get you some really good friends because the fact that, “similarities create friendship” holds true.

    friends-at-home

We all have that memory of hanging out with friends and eating the street food all day long. Sharing each moment of joy with laughter and gratification and an inevitable object, Food! Be it bad or good, we love going out with those caring souls and enjoying the taste of an enriching, may or may not be healthy, meal. When out with friends ‘health’ is that one matter which comes the last. What matters the most at those times is Fun and Food. The friendly and favorable dines at restaurants can be done in the most wild ways with no one around whom you have to act formal, and starting and ending your meal obediently following the table manners learned at school and home. You can be ‘you’ without being hesitant of the thought that what people will think. Friends are super cool creatures who make you learn that ‘you are actually one of a kind and definitely in its best version’.
Food can actually do wonders when it is about friends. A slight gesture of offering your lunch at school can create a darling feeling for you in the heart of the receiver. Giving a birthday treat to your fast friends at one of their suggested places might bring you a lot of memories that you will cherish all your life. An upset friend can be made cool by getting him/her his/her favorite pasta or may be a sandwich prepared by you, and it is even more happening when your friend is aware of the fact that how bad you are in the kitchen. So many hands on that one pizza slice which nobody took notice of at first, breaking a piece of chocolate into two halves when the shopkeeper is out of stock of that particular brand or buying just one pack of lays of a new flavor, all such remembrances will always earn you a tear of joy when recalling them on a future date.
On such calls, it can be made that ‘friends and food’ together is an evident base of life. One would definitely have those silly but yet worthy to remember moments of ‘food joy’ with the unmatchable and adorable intimate associates. Friendship is a relation which demands your attention and at the same time prospects you nothing but a feeling of oneness. The way we have meal together with our families, in friendship also, we, at few portions of time spend such happy hours. Very thoughtfully said, “Friends are the family whom we choose ourselves.” 

  • The Mirror Theory

    The Mirror Theory

    reflect

The world is a projection of our consciousness. The only way we can change the perspective of the people around us is by changing the way we look at the world. That simply means to bring about some change in our consciousness. Everything around is a mirror, a mirror that reflects all that you do or think. In every situation, every relationship, you would find reflections of your own self and doings. Each one of us has a world of his own, though all those private spaces of ours are entangled in each other to create a greater whole, a unified consensual reality. There is nothing too complex about this mirror theory though. The mirrors that exist all around us transform us socially and ultimately result in the formation of the being that we are today. We love some people and we hate some. But we love the ones who reflect the same energies as we do and we do not like the ones who possess the traits that we repel.

There is a simple exercise that will help you know yourself in a better way and you may understand the reflections the mirrors around you create each day. Think of a person whom you find really admirable and attractive. On a sheet of paper, think about the traits that they possess which you absolutely love and write them down. Now when you go through the sheet, you will realize that you have the same traits too. It’s just that you don’t believe in yourself. Stand up and manifest those traits in your life. You too can reflect all that they have in them.

Now, on the same sheet of paper, write down about the person you are emotionally detached to. Read through the traits. You contain them too, but it’s just that those negative traits aren’t that obvious in you. But they may be obvious before the ones, who spend more time with you, like your family. So when do these negative facets in your personality come to the surface? It happens when you are STRESSED! Stress becomes the villain here and people get to see the demons hiding within you during times of pressure. By getting to know ourselves and augmenting the qualities of those we admire in our own lives, we take a step further towards our spiritual awakening. When we recognise that the characteristics that repel us from others lie within us too, then a power is diffused that overshadows those traits which hold us in a state of denial. By doing this, we finally accept the wholeness that is contained within us and the compassion helps us create a different relationship with our own self and the ones we love.

Once you accept that you possess all kinds of traits, be it negative or positive, you may realize that the same holds true for others too. We are all angels and demons together manifested into a single human form. And as the mirror theory goes, when we cannot judge ourselves, we cannot even judge others. The world that we live in is a manifestation of our consciousness, a projection with all kinds of positive and negative qualities. So, when we focus on transforming our world by changing our perspectives, it changes our experiences and so our relationships with people change too.

Being self-righteous is alright at times, but feeling personally offended or letting your ego take over your sanity can be problematic. Even if you strongly disagree with people’s opinions and do not like what they do or say, you must not hold any grudges against them as individuals. Because, according to the mirror theory, it will all reflect back to you. Agree to disagree humbly and politely.

To learn to reflect and receive positive energies is a slow process, but be patient, and with time it will bring ease, love, comfort and spontaneity to every aspect of your life. Don’t be too harsh on yourself. Understand that this spiritual change would take time, but when it happens, it will be worth all the hard work that you put into it.

What is really important is while this entire change is taking shape within you; keep in mind those people who are deeply attached to you. Again when you begin to write all the good and the bad things about these people, you will know that it’s the emotional charge that associates you with all of them. Had it not been the emotions, nobody could have acted as a mirror for you or vice versa.  Now mix up all these sheets of paper and put them in a circle. The circle represents the ‘whole’ which is YOU! Yes, you! You are a reflection of all that is around you. Wow, isn’t the theory so interesting?  Indeed it is.

This entire theory is to let us know how each one of us are a part of the other and it’s the unique WHOLE that is more important than the special ONE! Its love and compassion that binds us together and hatred and envy breaks us into unimaginable, singular, helpless beings. Just be an amazing human being and see how all the amazing mirrors reflect your beauty.

  • Crazy For Crepes

    Crazy For Crepes

We all know that a mention to France and it’s main attractions remains incomplete without a special mention to the delectable French cuisine. Now be it a macaron, baguettes, foie gras or even just some French cheese or wine. But there have been some secrets of the French and of the French cuisine that have only recently been open to the world and we are so thankful for that! One of the dishes from the French cuisine which never exactly came into the limelight for many years despite it’s wonderful potential is Crepes. But since the world has come to know of it know, we can safely say that we are crazy for crepes.

    crepe1

Crepes or ‘Crêpes’ as they are known in French, is a type of a think pancake that is made from wheat flour or buckwheat flour. The word crepe has been derived from the Latin word ‘crispa’ meaning curled up because they are curled up when being served. Crepes are best known to have come from the Brittany region of northwest France. They were originally called galettes which meant flat cakes. Buckwheat was introduced in Brittany in the 12th century and since then, some variety of crepes has been said to be made. Wheat flour crepes were made only at the turn of the 20th century.

    crape2

A batter using all the required ingredients is made and then is poured on a hot frying pan with a trace of butter on the pan. The batter is spread around the pan using a spatula or a flat spoon and is allowed to cook properly for about 2-4 minutes and then flipping the other side. The crepes are usually filled with a variety of filling inside depending on when one is eating the crepes. For example, for a savory crepe, a normal filling could be anything among eggs, ham, ratatouille,  mushrooms and other meat products. For those who are health freaks, spinach and corn and other healthier options are always available. The sweet crepe ( the yummier one, of course) is filled with a generous amounts of fruits, ice-cream, whipped cream, Nutella etc. The crepe is then folded and served in a triangle or a like a roll.  For our guilty pleasure, we can add chocolate sauce, jus de fruits, chocolate chips etc on the top as a garnishing. The sweet crepes can be eaten as breakfast or dessert, but we’d say you eat them at both the times because they are THAT delicious!

    crepe3

Crepes can be described as one of the top contenders to become the national dish of France. But, they are also widely available in Belgium, Quebec and some other European countries. In France, no matter city you go to, you’ll find the busiest roads and the quietest street with at the very least one road-side vendor of hot crepes. These vendors’ stalls are called creperies and they serve a variety of crepes to choose from depending on your mood. But the best of the creperies can be found in Brittany. And we are not kidding when we say that the French take their food seriously. Just head over to France on February 2nd to see their love for crepes. La Chandeleur is a day when all the households make crepes and have an epic crepe flipping competition. And if you’re lucky, you can maybe participate and win this competition too and your prize will be.. CREPES!

Out of all the variety of crepes that are available, we need to give a mention to the Crepe Suzette which has become a well known dish around the world today. It a crepe which is topped with some beurre Suzette or a caramalized sauce of sugar and butter, a tangy zest of orange, Grand Mariner which is served a la flambé.  The origins or the how this dish was first made remains a mystery even today with some saying that it was an accidental discovery and others saying that it was named after French actress Suzzane Reichenberg. It went on to become one of the most famous desserts not in France, but also all over the world. It has a perfect combination of sweet, tangy and bitter in equal parts which sets this crepe apart from the rest of them. Mille crepes is another famous dish that is famous in the world of crepes. It basically means ‘million crepes’ and it is a type of cake that is made by making a cake by stacking a lot of crepes. I mean how can anyone resist that – cake and crepes. Yummy to the power maximum, we say!

    crepe4

    crepe5

Even though the concept of crepes is very similar to the concept of pancakes, the fillings inside set the dish apart. The dish has become very famous today with restaurants and cafe’s serving them in their breakfast menus and a number of creperies have also popped up in many places outside France. If you do get a chance, do try this delicious French invention and we are sure you too will join the crepe craziness. Happy Eating!
